The title illustration is a fine MR collage/drawing depicting a mysterious Egyptian temple hidden in the depths of a smoky cave.

S&T 60 p 21

page 23            This full-page drawing (dated 1979) features the foreboding entryway into an alien tomb.

S&T 60 p 23

page 25            This wonderfully vibrant drawing (dated 1980) perfectly captures the conclusion of this short story:

My form shall flicker and fade as utter Nothingness – my soul shall return to the horrible, delicious peace of oblivion.

S&T 60 p 25

As far as I know, none of these drawings were published elsewhere.

This issue is also noteworthy for the darkly whimsical back cover drawing by the talented CHET GOTTFRIED.

CARTOON CARNIVAL #1

  • 8-page mini-comix on various colors of heavy index stock
  • Published by Thru Black Holes Comix
  • Published August 2006
  • Copyright © 2006
  • $2.50

This super fun mini-comix depicts a wacky visit to the awesomely cool Funland amusement park. Here we find various ANDY NUKES cartoon characters mingling with a wonderful assortment of drawn and collaged MICHAEL RODEN characters, all set against the backdrop of an amusement arcade that could only have been created in the mind of editor and publisher MICHAEL RODEN.

cover
In this wacky MICHAEL RODEN & ANDY NUKES untitled drawing a slightly bewildered-looking Bucky Bird approaches a Crazy Man barker at the entrance to Funland. Note the Funland ticket (which is featured on almost every page).

page 2
The story starts out as Disco Mouse finds a ticket as the unbelievably zany pickle people hang out on the sidelines.

page 3
A goofy ANDY NUKES hillbilly character takes a ride on the Funland Turnpike as MICHAEL RODEN himself (in an image appropriated from The Crazy Men Turnpike from CRAZY MEN DELUXE) drives by.

pages 4-5
This super-cool two-pager features some truly bizarre characters and a wonderful Bogeyman poster (incorporating an ANDY NUKES version of the classic RORY HAYES Bogeyman character).

page 6
A curious monkey encounters an ibis selling Egyptian Hash Cakes. There’s a story behind this one, but, well, I’m not gonna tell it here.

page 7                           Information Page

page 8
An uncharacteristically happy Depressed Dog leaves Funland as a group of extremely weird insects looks on.

Not only is this comix a barrel of fun, but every copy comes with its own Funland Ticket! Highly recommended.

The only R-rated TBHC comix includes some great girlie art with an outer space theme. Each page is a single-panel drawing, three of which include cosmic outer-space backgrounds by MICHAEL RODEN. Especially noteworthy is the fine color cover by TOM BRINKMANN. This is one of those titles that would have attracted a lot of great artists had it continued to be published. Complete contents are:

In November 2005 MIKE began gathering material for this comix under the working title SPACE BABES and then CUTIE NUDIES.

The following month, MICHAEL RODEN wrote to me:

I think it will be really special. None of the Girls are doing nasty acts. It’s kind of like a fashion magazine with nudes. I figure it will be the 1st 2006 comix. I’m hoping to generate interest in TBHC with this title. MICHAEL RODEN: email to DLC dated Dec 4, 2005
